In 1989, during “perestroika”, the government declared through all the USSR the 1000th Anniversary of the Baptism of Russia. The Gospel boomed openly, on radio and TV, at stadiums and community centers. Spiritually starving people came to services, grabbed Bibles. At that time, in the West of the Soviet Union, where the Christian population was the largest, charities, missions and outreach groups were organized. In this way, in June of 1992, in Pinsk, Belarus, brothers K. Bayko, V. Bayko, N. Bazeliuk, S Shikula and N. Seluzhitsky, empowered by one goal “Go and preach” started their ministry under the guidance of the Pentecostal Union of Belarus. They called their ministry an outreach group “Calvary”. Konstantin Bayko was chosen and ordained by the
Pentecostal Union as the group’s evangelist, Valery Bayko become its leader. The group went to churchless cities and villages of Belarus and Russia – they carried on outreach services, started new churches, preached on the streets, squares, at community houses, stadiums, prisons, etc. This way, during the first 2.5 years, group Calvary started 13 churches in Russia and Belarus. The ministry expanded and at the end of 1994 Valery Bayko founded Mission Calvary, based on the group “Calvary” that till that time had significantly grown in number. In December of 1995, after long contemplations and after receiving confirmation from God, president of the Mission Valery Bayko and his family made a decision to move to the USA. In this move they saw clearly God’s plan of expanding the missionary ministry. In a month after the move Valery started to work at foundation of a mission center in Sacramento, California.

When I look back, I can say with assurance that beginning of the mission in the USA was a sheer act of faith. We had no experience, no command o of the English language, we needed to start everything from the beginning, but at the same time we had the calling and zeal from God. The Lord blessed this. The ministry goes on; the history of the Mission also goes on, and at all the times we can say "Thus far the LORD has helped us." (1Sam 7:12). Praise the Lord!
